Robotics: Find Out More

Glenfield College has a reputation for excellence in the field of robotics at the secondary school level.

Every year students interested in robotics develop and manufacture robots to compete nationally and internationally with other teams.  This exercises their planning, iterative design, manufacturing and mechanical control skills.  It is through the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation that the VEX Robotics Competition is made possible, and it is in this context in which we compete.

If you want your child to gain outstanding problem solving skills, and a decent measure of critical thinking and implementation abilities, then seriously consider entering them into our robotics program.

At the 2015 Vex Robotics World Championship – located in Louisville, Kentucky, USA – our efforts were recognised with the highest award possible: The World Championship Excellence Award.  This still remains the only time it has been awarded outside of the USA.

“This is the highest award presented in the VEX Robotics Competition. The recipient of this award is a team that exemplifies overall excellence in creating a high quality VEX robotics program. This team excels in many areas and is a shining example of dedication, devotion, hard work, and teamwork. As a strong contender in numerous award categories, this team deserves to be recognized for building a quality robotics program and a “team” committed to quality in everything that they do. The REC Foundation encourages local events to award the Excellence Award to the best overall team at each event.” – REC Foundation Judging Guidelines.

In 2013 we also won the World Championship Educate Award, exemplifying David Aston’s efforts at bringing robotics into the curriculum.

“Some electronics teachers focus on PICAXE and Arduino but I find that microcontrollers instantly engage students. Students who have not touched electronics before get into microcontrollers and I see their eyes light up and their programming skills go through the roof.” – David Aston

“The ‘Educate Award’ is given to a team that has been able to successfully integrate VEX Robotics into their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) curriculums. The winning team will demonstrate to the judges that VEX Robotics is not just an extracurricular activity, but a valuable tool used in their school to teach across many subjects in the classroom. At the World Championship, this award will be judged based on a 500-word online submission and subsequent team interviews.” -REC Foundation Judging Guidelines.
